I bought this locally reduced, sat at the store for over a year, mainly beause many lawns around here aren't designed for this type of mower, or maintained for it. I have a lot of highly shaded areas, in which grass grows fine and short. My biggest problem? The rotary mowers generate too much force and tons of dust in these areas. I got to thinking about using a power reel lawnmower as it wouldn't rip the fine grass out, and wouldn't stir up the dust. The area is far too big to do with a push mower. First up I tried to resurrect an old Craftsman that was sitting in my Grandpa's barn for the last 30 years. That didn't work (well it may still but this came along first). Then I came across this. It seemed like a well built machine, so I figured I'd give it a try.
I regularly mow to maybe an inch and a half (my neighbor actually goes lower with the same type of grass). I figured if I set it to 1 3/16 it wouldn't be a major change (my lawn, unlike his, is regularly fertilized, and greener anyway) it could afford to be a tad shorter. So I tried this height (I could always adjust later).
My biggest gripes were not with the cut, it cut beautifully like a golf course (needed some minor adjustments out of the box). I did not use the grass catcher, which I find inconvenient. The drive is a tad fast making it slightly difficult to control at points, they could have easily done a step down by gearing in a $700+ mower cost isn't the object so an extra couple of bucks here and there wouldn't have mattered, so I don't know why they didn't. I think they could have done some further adjustments to make turning it easier, at least with the drive release/reel stop mechanisms. The Briggs started and ran fine and had plenty of power for the application, went through the thicker portions without any problems. Height adjustment procedures outside of the given 4 ranges per where you move the front wheels, are time consuming. Sure its easy to do the 4 changes within range, but outside of that you're unbolting things. Go for the tallest cut you're changing the rear axle height. To me I doubt I'll ever touch the height adjustments beyond my initial setting, but if you're changing all the time keep it in mind. I'd maybe have put guards around the chains to keep them from getting grass in them which will accelerate wear, not an issue now but 15-20 years down the road it might be. Given that McLane has been around this long I don't see attaining the parts as being the problem, but rather the complexity of replacing them. The mower clearly looks like something you'll have around that long. This isn't your buy and toss every year $100 machine. Like a professional Snapper, an older Lawnboy (before they started getting cheap), this is a mower you'll probably have for a good number of years, so these should all be future considerations.
The cut itself is fine, chops up the grass nice and small, unlike side discharge where it is always clumping, they're nice fine clippings. It cuts fast due to its fast drive speed, I did the job in an hour and a half, about a half an hour less than my Lawnboy, and maybe 20 minutes more than using the tractor (due to layout mostly), so overall not bad. No dust, grass got cut, can't complain.
If you think you've got the proper lawn (it actually would work on most with proper maintnance), by all means go for it. It is built like it costs a lot, which it does. Keep in mind you might pay $700 for it now, but if you're buying $150 mowers every year or two it adds up faster than you think.
McLane is also known for top notch customer service, something else to consider.
