I bought the Fiskars Momentum reel mower for my dad for his 75th birthday. I was surprised to see this one show up in Amazon Vine so I had to get it to do a comparison.
The Fiskars Momementum is at the top of the line model in the world of push mowers. So, how does this slightlhy lesser model compare? With an MSRP of $229.99, it is only slightly less expensive than the Fiskars StaySharp Max model (formerly known as Momentum). Aside from the $30 savings, I will go over the key difference between the two reel mowers. Hopefully this review will help you decide which one you'll spring for.
--Ease of Pushing--
The StaySharp Plus was very easy to push compared to push mowers of the past. And comparing to the Max model, it seems just as easy, despite the differences on their boxes. The Plus claims to be 40% easier to push while the Max model is 60% easier to push although it doesn't indicate what it's comparing it to. Previous models? Conventional models is my guess. Anyway I tried them back to back and they are almost the same. I couldn't tell to be honest. They both utilize the same "Inertia drive" technology, which spins up the blades very fast, whereas in push mowers of the psat, the blades spin at relatively the same speed as the wheels.
Also, I should note it is VERY important to adjust the handle height according to your own height. It will make a world of difference in the ease of "powering" this mower efficiently.
--Cutting Efficacy--
Both reel mowers cut cleanly and efficiently. The cutting blades do not touch. But one key factor in the effectiveness of the blade is the speed of pushing the mower. The faster you push the faster the blade. It is critical that the blade spins fast to cut the grass properly due to the fact that the blades do not touch. Too slow and the grass will slip through between the blades. Cutting speed is crucial for a proper cut.
On older push powers, the blades rotated with the wheels and scraped against each other and it made it really hard to push and slow. This newer design makes it much easier to push without wearing out the blades. This is the key feature of the "StaySharp" cutting system. It has an "Inertia Drive" which basically spins up the blade much faster than the wheels.
Both reel mowers eject the cut grass forward. This provides a few advantages. It mulches the cut grass more finely, better fertilizing the lawn. Secondly it doesn't throw the grass all over your feet when you walk. The one downside to this, though is that if you have a severely overgrown lawn, it will require more work, but this is a fact of any push mower, so I can't ding it for that.
Lastly, regarding height adjustment, both mowers are capable of a 4" cut height, which is crucial if you have an overgrown lawn. The StaySharp Plus has a default adjustable range of 1.5-3.5". A 2-4" range can be achieved with a rather involved set of instructions. On the Max model, you have an adjustable range of 1-4", because the adjustment height wheels reside in front, rather than behind the blade. While this is clearly an advantage (which Fiskars calls "VersaCut Technology"), there is one downside which may or may not be applicable to you. Some lawns have gopher holes, such as mine. I noticed with the StaySharp Plus model with the big wheel in the front is better rolling right over them. The Momentum's small wheels in the front will dip into the holes and occasionally get stuck since they dig in when you push forward. With the height adjustment wheels trailing on the Plus model, it's less of a problem.
--Ergonomics--
This is one area where the StaySharp Max / Momentum is better than the StaySharp Plus model. While handle on the StaySharp Plus is perfectly usable and angled for a more natural angle on our forearm for reducing strain on your wrist and elbows, what I liked though about the Momentum is that the handle bar not only has that, but is bent so that you have the option to grip the mower on a completely vertical wrist position. I felt this was the most comfortable grip. Having the option of changing your wrist angle gives you a bit more leverage when more muscle is needed cutting a thicker lawn.
Regarding the handle, adjustments are easy but do take a minute or two, as the handle is secured at two points with cotter pins. This applies to both models.
--Summary--
Anyway here's the breakdown of the Pros and Cons for this product:
PROS:
-Inertia Drive Technology, blades spin 2-3x faster than other brand reel mowers.
-StaySharp Cutting system (extremely sharp blades that don't touch therefore you never have to sharpen).
-Very easy to push compared to the push mowers of the past. A child can push this thing (though not recommended).
-Quick, accessible adjustments to handle height, cut height, blade cam adjustment, etc.
-Ejects cut grass forward, mulching the grass finer for improved lawn fertilization.
-Uses no fossil fuels, no pollution
-Very quiet operation compared to gasoline lawn mowers.
-Cuts all types of grass.
-1.5"-3.5" cut height adjustment.
-Compact storage compared to gasoline lawn mower.
-Made by top tier brand, Fiskars, whose specialty are scissors and gardening equipment.
-Cheaper than a gasoline mower.
CONS:
-May require some effort for overgrown lawns.
-Doesn't cut large shrubs, long dandelions and weeds.
-About $100 more expensive than classic reel mowers.
-Full range of cut height not available at once.
-Changing to a 2-4" requires involved modification steps.
-Two-year limited warranty
-Made in China. (Arguable)
--Final Thoughts--
If $30 is not a big difference to you, I'd definitely recommend going with the StaySharp Max (Momentum) model, as it has a nicer handle, slightly longer blade (18" vs 17"), has a easer one-step height adjustment, wider cut-height adjustment, and longer (3 year) limited warranty (vs. two for this model). If you have lots of gopher holes, you might consider the StaySharp Plus it has a larger wheel in the front and easily roll over the gopher holes. But by in large, the StaySharp Max is clearly the better choice.. Plus it is on sale at $191.27 now, while this one is selling at MSRP at $229.99.
